The other day I have had one of those special massages. The one I’ve got is based on ayurvedic principles of balance among body, mind and soul. One of the special properties of Ayurveda is the art of massage with essential oils. Those massages are very sensual, an ideal way to relax, and as part of the oldest medicine system known to mankind, effective in improving blood circulation, body detoxification and rejuvenation.
Now I don’t get massages very often, because they seem like too much papering to me and less healing, but all that might change because the last one did wonders for my aching back, tension in my muscles and my overall well being.
For centuries, human touch has been shown to be emotionally and physically healing. When person is getting a massage, electrical signals are transmitted both to the local area and throughout the body. These signals, in combination with the healing properties of touch, help heal damaged muscle, stimulate circulation, clear waste products via the lymphatic system, boost the activity of the immune system, reduce pain and tension, and induce a calming effect. Massage may also enhance well being by stimulating the release of endorphins (natural painkillers and mood elevators) and reducing levels of certain stress hormones. It is scientifically proven, that sense of lightness and calm after the massage reduces stress level and strengthens the immune system functions.
Massage brings both body and muscles into balance, makes them stronger and more elastic. All massage types affect the skin, blood circulation, muscles, lymphatic and respiratory system, skeletal and nervous system. They reduce spasms and stimulate better circulation without pressuring your heart ... which leads to relaxation. Your breathing becomes slower and deeper and the bones are better supplied with nutrients and oxygen.
All massages involve use of various oils - mineral oils are used for the elimination of friction during the massage and do not penetrate into the body while herbal oils penetrate the body.
Depending on the goal of a massage, various essential oils can enhance blood circulation, relieve muscle inflammatory processes, eliminate the pain ... Some oils can accelerate process of toxin releasing and make it more effective. That is exactly the goal of Shadiva of India (the massage I’ve got the other day), to rid body of toxins and revive the senses. It involves use of worm oil that contains extracts of ginger lily and neem.
Benefits of massage and enhanced relaxation, mood, and well being (in the short and long term after it) are numerous.
It is important how we love our bodies and minds and how much attention we give to ourselves. And having a massage definitely means giving attention and loving ourselves.
